Are you sure you filled in the correct outbound SMTP server
Have you tried sending an e-mail using Telnet for example

I had the same problem occurring in the event log of either of my MOSS (SharePoint 2007) front end web servers when users were filling out InfoPath forms with an email submit.

The resolution in this case was to go to MOSS Central Admin and check the SMTP settings for your outbound mail settings. Make sure the mail server exists and try a ping etc from the front end web server/s. Make sure you are using the correct domain addressing etc as well since emails which fail to send may get lost.

If this does not correct the problem. Remove this and any other SMTP service from your farm topology under central admin options. Then re-create the outbound mail settings being sure to specify correct required character set etc. Go back to the farm topology and make sure that this server is listed as an SMTP server for your farm; if not, then consider an IISRESET or machine reboot at this stage.

If the SMTP service/machine is listed, perform an app pool recyle on applicable pools since the SMTP settings appear to get cached by MOSS. Test an InfoPath form or alert which will send an SMTP email from within SharePoint. If this does not work, go for a full IISRESET or possibly a full machine reboot.

    Hi Paul,

I have a similar problem. I have tested the SMTP server independently.

Cannot connect to SMTP host [encrypted]

Have you been able to come up with a solution Would you please point me to where I cand find a sample step by step configuration process

    Thank you much,

    David.

    Hi David,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you I've been out of the office.

I did fix the problem it turns out to be a restriction on the SMTP server, under the "Access Tab" for SMTP properties under IIS, the connection was restricted to certain IP addresses only.

    Thanks, Paul.

    Hi,

Another cause may be anti-virus software protection on the server that prevents the use of SMTP on port 25. That's what we just had.

Yes I've doubled checked and I'm 100% sure it's correct

I will try the to telnet the SMTP when I return to the office

    Thanks, Paul.
