Sharepoint Server might need to be reconfigured but I don't want to loose my work

I am using Sharepoint Server 2007 RTM

I have a problem backing up a server farm.

1. When I go to central administration site> Operations>Services on Server I cannot find any services shown.

2. As a result when I try to backup my Server Farm, I cannot do this because the Timer service is not running.

3. When I click on the custom radio button:

Windows SharePoint services database appear.

4. I do not want to reconfigure SharePoint because we will lose all our content and Sites and custom code.

My questions are:

1. Is there any way to reconfigure the server without losing all our work

2. Can I backup the databases -reconfigure and then restore again Will my work be safe

3. Are there any other fixes we can do

I used the command line and restored my backup and everything worked fine. After that I reinstalled Sharepoint and got things working back to normal.
