IE Crashing when opening Sharepoint list

When a user tries to open a list in Datasheet view on our sharepoint site they are being welcomed by the nice 'IE Has encountered a problem and needs to close.' Error.  This just started a couple days ago.  This is to the point that I can't open a couple of my administrative lists anymore.

We are currently running:
WSS v3
MSSQL 2000
Happening on IE 6 AND IE 7
Office 2003
ONLY I have Sharepoint Designer 2007 - This has been installed and used for a couple of weeks before problem arrived.
ONLY seems to be happening on Service Pack 2 computers.

I've seen lots of posts about deleting the dll 'OWSSUPP.DLL' when running Office 2007 or uninstalling ALL office 2007 products.  However I am receiving this on several computers that do not have anything office 2007 on them.  I also don't have a 'Microsoft Office Diagnostics' application which is the suggested second step to run.

This is the data that is shown in the 'what this error report contains'

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16414 ModName: mso.dll
ModVer: 12.0.4518.1014 Offset: 0011eda5

Thanks.

EDITED TO INCLUDE ALL KNOWN INFORMATION.

Run the Microsoft Office Diagnostics that is installed with Office 2007.  Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Tools -> Microsoft Office Diagnostics.

IE Crashing when opening Sharepoint list

I was just told by one of my IT guys that about 2 days ago he did a couple of Windows updates... Mysteriously we now have this issue...

Same problem here, my system has never been anywhere near Office 2007 with the exception of SP Designer 2007; otherwise it has:

    • Office 2003 Pro
    • WinXP Pro x64
    • MOSS 2007 running on SQL2k database

The bizarre things compared to above posts:

    • I get the error even if I don't try opening lists in datasheet view (although when I do it consistently crashes IE7)
    • I do not get any problems when using IE6 on another machine

I just uninstalled Sharepoint Designer 2007 and now it works.

So then I starting trying things:

Reinstalled sharepoint designer 2007 - still works
Ran the office diagnostics that is istalled with sharepoint designer 2007 and the 'setup Diagnostic' found one problem and was able to fix it. The list still works as of right now.

    Few changes

-- Some soft of hotfix or patch was applied to your system in the last few days

-- IE crashes when viewing a list in MOSS or WSSv3

    -- Uninstalled SP Designer 2007

-- IE plays friendly with lists again

    -- Reinstalled SP Designer

-- IE plays friendly with lists still

-- Ran office diagnostics to see if it would find an issue like previous user had posted. Setup diagnostic fixed one problem

-- IE plays friendly with lists still.

Atleast to me the issue hasn't shown again.

In theory, it should be impossible to crash IE. Obviously this is not true in practice... the only suggestion I have is to make sure all patches and updates are installed. Running IE7 would be ideal. I know Microsoft has snuck crash fixes into security updates in the past.

    Hey All,

My IE was working well running Office 2007 and Designer 2007 but once I installed Office 2003, I started having random crashes, typically while vieweing my SharePoint/WSS site.

Things got worse when I removed Office 2003 and left 2007, since the uninstall removed the "name.dll" file used by WSS.  I would consistently receive JS errors on every WSS page.

I have resolved this by uninstalling Office 2003, uninstalling Office 2007, then reinstalling Office 2007.  I wish I had a better solution for you, but maybe you can try removing Office and SharePoint designer, try browsing again, then install one app at a time.

    Good luck

    N

The same basic solution worked for me. I skipped the uninstall / reinstall process, however.

The Setup Diagnostic ran 5 checks and found 1 fix. No details were given related to what was "fixed"

Here is a rundown of my config:

    • WinXP
    • Office 2003
    • SharePoint Designer 2007

Recient patches that might be related:

    • KB928090
    • KB932554
    • KB929434
    • KB918118
    • KB924667

We tried uninstalling all of the windows updates but we are still having the issue.

However I now have a bit more info around it.

We are ONLY recieving the crash when we try to view a list in the 'datagrid' view. This error is easily repeatable.

    Any thoughts

  • bagjuice

We've been able to nail this down to ONLY serivce pack 2 machines when opening in Datasheet view.

I don't understand why more people arn't having this issue...

  • zhihao

Same problem here. I had xp sp2, Office 2003 and Designer 2007 ( trial). It got to the point where IE7 crashed everytime I clicked on any link in our Moss 2007 environmennt.

    I uninstalled IE7 - same issue

I ran the Office DIag's from Designer 07 and I have not had a problem since. Designer 07 told me it found and fixed one problem, but would not tell me exactly which file it fixed.

  • Curt Broyles

I can verify this issue... Is there a case opened by anyone for this

  • pnp

Dilbert... Am I reading your post correctly:

-- Some soft of hotfix or patch was applied to your system in the last few days

-- IE crashes when viewing a list in MOSS or WSSv3

    -- Uninstalled SP Designer 2007

-- IE plays friendly with lists again

    -- Reinstalled SP Designer

-- IE crashes when view a list

-- Ran office diagnostics. Setup diagnostic fixed one problem

-- IE plays friendly with lists again

  • PerPixel

It's almost certainly not just service pack 2... it's some combination of that update and the software installed on those machines that's causing the problem.

Since it isn't widespread, there's a good chance it's an application proprietary to your organization that's causing the incompatibility.

There might be a connection. Microsoft has extensive QA procedures to make sure patches don't break things that shouldn't be broken, but things do leak through occasionally...
