Go into Central Administration on your Sharepoint Server, Open the Operations tab, Click inside the Topologies and Services area the second bullet which is Services on Server, if you dont see Office Sharepoint Server Search at this point look up and find the bullet area to select server role...... click custom and see if you see it. You can see it also if you pick Search Indexing.
Make sure the Office SharePoint Server Search service is running. It is a good idea to make sure Windows SharePoint Services Help Search is running as well since it is required also.
What setup option did you use to install your SharePoint server Was it Complete or WFE If you used WFE, then no app services are intalled and consequently you won't be able to enable search. I'd recommend re-installation in this case.
Gary and Ishai's reply will fix your problem... you wont actually see a service called Index but if you open the Office Sharepoint Server Search you will find it at the top of the screen there.
Recomend you plan your environment also and actually implement this feature on the box that makes most sense for your implementation. Once this is set just go back and finish the SSP install. I generally open another window side by side during this operation when i forget to add the search before i install SSP.
I really dont know what I have done wrong. I have 2 boxes "shpt" & "shptsql" I cant for the life of me find the Office Sharepoint Sever Search. I have also checked the SQL server and there in no database been created for the service. How do I implement this
I wish a screenshot could be put up here but I dont think thats possible. The only think I can think of at this point with your issue is you are not logged on with the appropriate permissions to make the change. I cant think of any other reason off the top of my head why your not able to do this action unless you had an issue with rights.
Index Server combo box greyed out

in central admin, go to "operations" and "services on server" and then start the microsoft office search, with atleast the "index" role turned on.
good luck!
