Hi,
It could be that your web server stops responding after a certain point. Have a look at the event viewer and see if there is anything there that might clue you in. Is this problem occuring across all of your sites in WSS or just one site in particular If you only have one site collection I would suggest creating a new one and try to reproduce this issue.
