Connecting user profiles to a standard aspnetsql membership BEST PRACTICE?

I have successfully set up FBA using an aspnet membership db (good articles here and here). I can add users, and also have set up the Codeplex based tool for adding users to the membership database via their nifty webpart .

Now I want to add user profiles for the membership db users, and allow users to maintain their profiles. What is the BEST PRACTICE for accomplishing this

I have started working with a BDC connection to the membership db, but cannot successfully connect, and don't know if this is a supported/recommended approach anyway.

Please advise.
