Configuration Failed - Failed to secure the sharepoint resources

Hello,

Now that our Beta 2 trial version has expired it is time to roll into release version of SharePoint server 2007.  Now onto the problem, as expected.

Once Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 have been configured I went onto installing SharePoint 2007 standard, which went just fine.  Once the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration started it crawled its way to step 4 and failed giving the following error:

An exception of type System.ArgumentException was thrown.  Additional exception information: Cannot apply security settings to resource C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS as it does not exist.

I navigated to the designated library and just like it said, HOST file was not there.  Any ideas why, and how this can be resolved.

Thanks.

This appears to be a bug in SharePoint.

If it gives you an error about a HOSTS file, create a new text file named HOSTS in the system32/drivers/etc directory and save it as a file with no extension. This will get you past the initial install. After running the wizard, give the WSS_ADMIN_WPG computer group all except for full control permissions over the folder (see here http://blogs.msdn.com/jjameson/archive/2007/05/05/the-case-of-the-disappearing-hosts-file.aspx).
