I have IE 6 SP2. When users click on an MS Word document URL, some machines running IE will see IE crash while on some microsoft word automatically shuts down.
If i copy the URL for the word document and paste it in the browser the document opens up without any issues.
I think saw this behaviour after a MS security update was automatically updated on the machine this week, but i am not sure.
The event log contains the following error, the machines are scanned for spyware etc and they seem to be clean.
Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2945, fault address 0x00012a5b.
any suggests to fix this would help.
thanks

Okay, i found a solution, the following worked for me and another computer at work:
Step 1: Delete C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12\OWSSUPP.DLL (looks like Outlook Web SharePoint Support to me)
Run the MS Office Diagnostic Tool in your start menu (MS Office/MS Office Tools)
It should find one error and fix it for you.
Then restart.

Ok, We had this too.
The problem is the user that has this problem probably has some older office app also installed on his pc.
I think this is what happens (at least I think it happend in our case)
- user got new laptop with off2007 and visio 2003
- use goes to sharepoint for the first time and the first documnet opened is a visio one (opens correctly)
- in IE the above mentioned dll is registered as a plugin but... the 2003 version of the dll is used (each version has it's own version of this dll)
- User tries to open word doc and that's where the old dll messes up IE because it has to address word2007.
I disabled the plugin in IE (logged in as admin) and then let the user login and try to open word doc. Error gone.
Hope this helps.

worked fine with IE7 / WSS 3.0 / Office 2003

We see the same error on some computers here too.
We have tried rolling back from IE 7 to 6, disabling bugs, trying to pick possibly updates that might have caused it to no success.

Pour moi ,
la dll a ete istallee par Microsoft Expression Web
elle se trouve dans le repertoire :
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Expression\Office12
je l'ai renomme en OWSSUPP.new.dll
je peux de nouveau ouvrir mes documents word sur sharepoint
Expression Web fonctionne toujours
Merci AndrewEEE

I had 2 different versions of this DLL. The second one was in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 11\OWSSUPP.DLL. I renamed each one to OWSSUPP-OLD.DLL and rebooted.
This stopped the IE crashes. The Word doc opened in the browser. "Edit in Word" displayed a dialog box that there wasn't a WSS compatible editor available.
I ran Repair in Word 2003 and the Office 11 version of the DLL was restored but "Edit in Word" acted the same.
The only Office 2007 application I have on my "Office 2003" laptop is SharePoint Designer 2007. In SPD, I ran Help-Office Diagnostics. It restored the Office 12 version of OWSSUPP.DLL.
I closed IE7 and reopened it. IE7 will now correctly launch Word 2007 from my WSS 3.0 sites without crashing.

I have a very similar issue, but I'm not sure which plug-in to disable. This user is having an issue with some of the links which I'm told open html files. How do you determine which plug-in is the culprit I'll need to double check on the versions of Office & Visio if they would still be involved in the problem, but I think they are running Office 2003 with Visio 2007. Any help would be great.
