How do you hide the built in menu options on a sharepoint site (i.e. Site Settings, Create, etc) I have a user which I have setup as a "Reader" yet he seems to have full control over the site.
Also, I have a web part on the home page which has a link labelled "Add New Link" - again this user has access to this link and is able to add links to the site - how can I disable this

Usually if a user only has reader permissions he can open (for instance) Site Settings but not then Save any changes.
If this user can *also* save changes and he only has Reader permissions, he is probably incorrectly a member of the local Administrators group on the server on which you are running the SharePoint v2 product.
Remove him/her from this Group. Members of it have full rights to the SharePoint sites irrespective of Site Group membership.

Firstly, I am using Sharepoint v2 (the one which needs to be installed for TFS to work) - I don't know if that changes things.
The user I am testing with is a new user created just for this test. He has been added to a newly created group which has been created for this test. I have assigned the "Reader" rights to the group.
Is there something else I need to do

In v2 you can remove the menu items by opening the default.aspx page in Front Page 2003; selecting the section of the page; right-clicking and following one of the options there which allows you to amend (add; modify; remove) menu items.
These menu items will then be removed for all users.
You are in effect relying on the fact that the Admins will still know the URLs behind them. If you want to help the Admins you can put a link behind a site image (i.e. the Admin can click on the image and will go to say "Site Settings".

It actually sounds like the user may have more rights than you think. Would they belong to a group that may have elevated rights SharePoint V3 has been written so that if you do not have rights to a particular action you will not see it.

Hi Mike, and thanks - that certainly clears things up.
With regards to group membership... the user is not in a local admin group on the server, but is still able to make changes. I am quite concerned because any user can change the shared home page through the web browser, which obviously affects everyone.
Where else could I find something which would have given a user this level of permission
