As per spec, Substitute Audio Video in Secondary Video set is for substitution of Main Audio/Video in the corresponding Primary Video set . Why is this sort of substitution required. Can any one expalin the necessity of this substitution in real time HDDVD movie discs.

Secondary audio video clips can contain SubVideo or SubAudio tracks. SubVideo/SubVideo is an audio/video track in addtion to the main audio/video track. Sample application:
Additionally to our main movie you can deliver a sub video / audio track that contains the director comments. If the user wants to see/hear the director comments you can run this secondary av clip in parallel to the primary av clip and mix the sub video / sub audio with the main video / main audio (e.g. overlay the sub video on the bottom right corner).
(a HD-DVD video player has 2 video and audio decoder, one for the main-streams and one for the sub-stream, so parallel decoding and mixing during playback is possible)

There are two things with similar names that are not quite the same -- Sub Audio / Video and Substitute Audio / Video.
In this case, "Sub" is not short for "Substitute" -- it's as opposed to "Main".
You have the Primary EVOB which can contain 1 Main and 1 Sub stream. Typically, that would mean 1 HD full-screen movie (Main) and 1 smaller synchronised PIP (Sub).
The Secondary EVOB can also carry 1 Main and 1 Sub stream, but the Main stream is called "Substitute" because you would play it instead of the Primary video, not on top of it. Scenarios for this would downloading HD trailers, etc. since the sub video only is typically only SD.

Substitute clips are part of secondary title sets and that mains they don't have to be located on the HD-DVD disc.
A simple application:
You deliver your HD-DVD with a PrimaryAudioVideo clips that contains a movie and english audio language. On a http server you provide audio track in spanish, germany, japan, .... So the user the has the possiblity to watch the movie in every language he want by connecting to your server and downloading the secondary title set that contains the language he wants to hear.
