Can someone test my gadget please?

I posted my gadget a couple weeks ago and it has gotten a good number of downloads (~1500 atm) but mostly negative response. I suspect the problem is that I developed and tested this gadget on Vista RTM, but the Gallery only lets you choose "RC1" as the newest compatibility level (stupid ). I have not had any problems loading into the Sidebar on any RTM machine.

What would really help me is to get a few people try to load it up and make sure it is working properly under a variety of environments (RC1, RC2, Beta, RTM, whatever), so I can figure out what the issue is that people are having. You won't be able to test the full functionality of the gadget because it requires you to have a particular type of webcam to stream video. However, I think the majority of the issues are likely due to initially loading the ActiveX control I am using, so just installing the gadget will test that.

Thanks in advance.

From the descriptions, I'd say the ocx has a few bugs and is suffering from buffer overruns.

Live/MSDN aren't really the best place to get assistance in debugging it, try posting it on AeroXperience - you may may get a better response.

There's also the difference of privilages. If users are running with an elevated administrator, you may see problems, depending on how the OCX works.

Gadgets that rely on HKCU sometimes exhibit problems under an elevated administrator. The behaviour is as if HKCU is not the current users profile. I'll get around to writing a Repro and documenting at some point!

It may not be your problem, but I'd still check it. You can quickly test by exiting Sidebar, right clicking on the Sidebar icon on the Start menu, and select run as Administrator.

Sidebar runs protected, so any Buffer Overruns will result in Sidebar being killed. If you run IE7 in protected mode, you'll see the same result.

The only fix is for D-Link to fix their code.

    Hi,

as I said, I also tested it on Windows Vista Ultimate (Beta2 and RC1) and Vista Business (RTM).

Turns out the problem is DEP.  My dev systems are older and don't support DEP, so I never noticed an issue.  On newer systems, the gadget bombs on install unless DEP is disabled.  Anyone know what the story is with DEP and the Sidebar   The ActiveX control is written and signed by D-link and works fine in IE7 under Vista, so I'm not clear on why DEP is bagging it.

Thanks for the responses guys. I've only tested it on Vista Ultimate. I'll try it on other versions and post on Aero.

    Hi,

I have the Business edition and can't install the gadget (Sidebar stops working everytime)!

I also tested on Beta2 and RC1 and there it doesn't work too!

Ok, I tested downloading the gadget from the gallery, installing it and connecting to a camera on Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate clean installs (all RTM) and it worked perfectly every time. I'm completely stumped on what the issue is people are having. The only variable could be hardware, but I don't see why system hardware would affect such a simple gadget.
