Please post your experiences burning discs for testing content

As a community service, can you please reply to this thread with your successful combinations for burning DVD discs for testing Just trying to get a list of options for folks who are trying to get content onto the players.

In particular:

  • Which type of disc did you use (+R, -R, etc.)
  • Which software did you use to burn it
  • What options did you have turned on
  • etc.

Not so interested in hearing about failed attempts :-)

Thanks!

Sonic software on Verbatim 4x and Sony 2x DVD-RW. Various DVD-R work fine too...

I've found that I get the best compatibility with all players if I burn out of Sonic's Formatter software. Previously I've burned out of Sonic's RecordNow and Nero but have run into issues with compatibility, particularly on Toshiba's HD-A2 player (though this may have been fixed with a firmware update -- I'm not sure. The way I've been doing it works still.)

I currently burn to a Philips DVD+RW. For me, this also cuts down in burning time - writing to a DVD+RW is much faster than to a DVD-R!

Using Nero, however with slightly different settings (UDF!) from the poster above a year ago:
    • Select DVD-ROM UDF
    • Select "No Multisession"
    • Select UDF v.2.5 (!)
    • Press the "NEW" button
    • Dragging the project folders HVDVD_TS and ADV_OBJ into the root
    • Press Burn button
    • Make sure you have Finalize disc selected (should be greyed out if you have "no multisession" selected)
Works 100% Perfectly in my Toshiba HD-E1 (European version of the HD-A2). I was able to burn&play the AVS demo disk and also the ColouredBlocksAttack!

I had my script off to my partner who muxes the video and burns the project. He is using:

Sonic and Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs. These are playing well in the Toshiba players.

You can use any cheap CD-R, DVD-R ...for DVD+R Dual Layer you MUST use Verbatim discs.

    Use Nero

    -Select DVD-ROM UDF
    -Select "No Multisession"
    -Select UDF v.2.01
-Check the box that says "Xbox Compatibility"
    -Press the "NEW" button
-drag just your finished project into the root of the new disc
Ex. HVDVD_TS and ADV_OBJ into the root
    -Press Burn button
-Make sure you have Finalize disc selected (should be greyed out if you have "no multisession" selected

Works 100% Perfectly in the player

Player will say "Loading" for about 60 seconds...then it will say "HD-DVD" then it will say "Play"

I never tested DVD+R single layer discs but I am sure they will be fine.

If you are getting a ...c00c error...its a bug in your .js file that loads for that particular title...So if your first title is Title001 and you get a ...c00c error....when you put the disc in, its the .js that runs in Title001 that has a bug.

    Hi Peter,

I am not sure if this helpful but our team did a white paper in which we used Nero 7 to test burn +R and -R from 6 major brands. We burnt the same content onto 10 discs from each brand and then tested the playback of each disc. the full white paper can be found here: http://dostudio.netblender.com/wikipapers/wiki_dvdr.asp

We did not test any RW formats and have had some issues with HD-DVD-Rs in our burner so they did not make it into the white paper. Overall we found that if you stay with a name brand it will work 10 times out of 10. We have burnt close to 1,000 DVD-Rs since we started 90% of those have been Memorex DVD+R our success rate has been high with those discs. For our internal testing we do use our own Burning software that just burns the right disc image with very little overhead this might contribute to our success rate, we are not sure.

    Hope that helps.

For testing content I've been using Imation DVD-RW and Verbatim DVD+RWs. Using RW's cuts down on wasted discs.

I also get some (sick ) satisfaction out of the fact that I normally burn the DVD's with a Blu-Ray drive.
