CRM 3.0 - Insert template & Subject is truncated

When using CRM 3.0, every time you insert a template, it truncates & replaces the original subject text (which includes the required tracking identifiers).

Is there a way of turning this feature off - it didn't happen in 1.2, so unsure why it appears to be the new default.
