First, just start programming. It doesn't matter if it is VC++, C#, JAVA or anyting else. The best thing you can do is looking around for someone who can help you, for example if a teacher can teach you Java or if a great friend of yours is a developer that uses C#, you must go for it.

The language or environment doesn't really matter when you want to learn the basics. The best thing to learn someting fast and good is to learn from a profecional. Afterwise when you understand the basics and understand OO, it is easy to switch to any other OO language.

.NET has a great future, there is alot of work at the moment for .NET developers and this will continue. Microsoft offers great books, articles, webcasts, examples and any thinkable resource you can use to learn! So, learning .NET is great and you can use alot of resources that make it much easier.

There are alot of topics with information about VC++ versus C#, Java versus C# and much more. But you should learn the basics first. I should suggest C# because it suits me. I do some Visual Basic.NET to, but I just don't like the syntax because I'm not used to it. But it is just a matter of taste and there are thousand of people who love the syntax of Visual Basic.NET.
