Hello everyone,
I am learning developing C/C++ applications for Windows Mobile platform. I often met with the two confusing item, Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 2005. Are they the same thing -- means the next version of Windows Mobile 2003
thanks in advance,
George

Windows Mobile 5.0 == Windows Mobile 2005?

MS naming conventions for mobile products is all over the place, even the OS has gone from PPC2003 to WM5.0, and that's not even including the differently named versions of CE which other OS's derive from, it's all very confusing and hard to know what anyone is talking about.
please...
1. Stop re-naming products, it's confusing.
2. Either number according to year OR sequentially, not both!

Thank you Manav,
Your reply is very informative. But from the URL you provided, I can not find,
1. Windows Mobile is built on top of Windows CE;
2. Windows Mobile is of two types of products -- smart phone edition and pocket PC edition.

They are not the same as there's no such product as "Windows Mobile 2005", official product name is “Windows Mobile 5.0”.

Thank you very much Ilya!
After reading the web site, I am more confused. :-)
I think my previous understanding is wrong. There is no Windows Mobile 2005, no Windows Mobile 5.0 -- only Windows CE 5.0. Is that right
BTW: I have bought a device which is running "Windows Mobile 2005" as in the manual. I am confused because Microsoft does not provide SDK for Windows Mobile 2005, but only 5.0 -- such is the initiative of my question.

George

Thank you Anarchy,
I fully agree with your points. Do you have any links from Microsoft which clarifies that the naming of the product is Windows CE 5.0 other than Windows Mobile 2005

Are there any official documents dealing with this point -- no Windows Mobile 2005, only Windows CE 5.0

Are there any official documents illustrating this point (no Windows Mobile 2005, only Windows Mobile 5.0)

I don't see where you going with this thread and how it's related to development, so I'm going to close it as off topic. If you have further questions on that, please post them to relevant NG:

Here's the link for embedded products, list of products is on the left. Note Windows CE is... just a Windows CE.
