I filled in a support thingy here: http://support.live.com/eform.aspx productKey=wlmessenger&page=wlsupport_home_options_form_byemail&ct=eformts and I then got an e-mail back from a Microsoft employee asking for more info on the problem. I gave her the information she asked and I included my methods of fixing the problem; reinstalling M Live, removing temp files, signing in on other PCs and using other accounts on my PC. She forwarded this info on to a M Live specialist and he told me to just reinstall M Live and remove Temp files. I had already done that twice before... but like I told him in my next email I did what he said to do again and it didn't fix my problem.

He said that they have exhausted all troubleshooting steps but are still looking into it. You guys should try it out as you might have more luck.

    Question for Zennway and JamieS...

are you guys using any windows messenger addons (like msg plus! or msg discovery for example) or are you just  using windows live by its self... im asking just to rule out the possibility that it's not the addons that are casuing this error.

what i did was i edit my contact card or information. i can change my nick after that. but when i log in in another computer, my nick will be still my email address. It seems like the information wasn't saved and i need to change my nick whenever i jog in in other computer.

regarding to the contact list problem, i deleted all my contact list, including the contacts in my hotmail then add all of them again. of course, before deleting, i already save the contact list. and i think this solution works thoguh not perfectly as some of my friends still can't get the online alert when i online. but with this, you can see your friend online when they are supposed to be in the online list.

    ya! exactly the same problem.

I am, also called Q in the chat window.

someone, please tell us what to do

i tried to sign in in different computer, but still the same

I was disconnected aswel because of router problems and then the display name problem occured when i loged back in..

Exactly the same for me too... in order to get them back I had to delete them from my contact list and re-add them.  I don't get the problem using another account and uninstalling/reinstalling hasn't fixed it so it must be my ACCOUNT that has the actuall error.

Same thing is happening to me....

    - my name remains my email address no matter what I do to change it :S

    - personal name cannot be changed either

    - in conversations my name appears as "Q" eg. Q says: blah blah

    - contacts appear offline or sometimes they appear online in my offline list

I uninstalled Windows Live Messenger and installed MSN Messenger 7.5 and I could than change my name again, once i reverted back to Windows Live Messenger the problems above once again occured... O.o

If any solution is found i'd appreciate it much if you'd email me cuz in all honesty this really sucks :(

Does no one know how to help I know this isn't exactly a very big problem but I haven't been able to find help anywhere else.

I understand that this is the wrong forum but I want to say that somehow my problem was fixed. I don't know if Microsoft did it as they said they couldn't help me anymore and I have had no email from them for a while now, or if it was something I have done.

If it was something I have done I will tell you what changes I have made to my account in the last hour.

I read that "trick" with the contact card how you can use it to change your Display name until you signed out of msn. I changed my name and after a while signed out to use another account to see contacts on it. On this alternate account (the one WITHOUT the problem) I checked its contact card but changed nothing. I was on this account for a while then went back to my original account (the one WITH the problem) and my Display name had changed to the name that was in the contact card of the ALT account for some reason. I was then able to change it to what ever I wanted using the way you are supposed to (via personal settings).

I hope this works for you guys.

I am having the same problem.

At the main screen (with all my contacts) it says I am called my email address, but in a chat window I am called "Q". I used to be called "n_n" before I had this problem.

since this is not a development question, the best place to ask is over at the communities:

    www.microsoft.com/communities

    in the appropriate newsgroups or:

    http://support.live.com

    Thanks

i found out another problem here . few of my contacts are actually online but they appear to be offline in my contact list . I only realised this when my friends and I in a same conversation window . I was like so suprised when i discovered this because they are actually online in my friends' contact list but only mine , they appear to be offline.

Is that something wrong with my msn account any solution for this

I use no add-ons unless that includes the Scanner thingy (sorry I don't know what it's called) that you have to download from MSN when you send files via messenger. I had made no changes to software or hardware at all in the last day or two before I had the problem. I got disconnected from the internet as I am on a LAN and the PC with the modem had to restart, therefore I was signed out of MSN. I signed in again after a minute and I first noticed the name thing.
