What does a Filter do in Report Model

In a Model designer when you select and Entity you have list of Attributes on the right side. There you have the option to add new "Folder", "Source Field", "Expression", "Role" and "Filter".

Can anyone explain in a bit detail what this filter can be used for. Can it be used to filter data from underlying entity (I am not looking for SecurityFilter)

I am working on Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3027.00

Thanks,
Rahul

    thanks for the reply.
What you explained was not confusing. I knew you could use the filters in model in reports. The way I understand these filters is that they are optional in your report, I don't want it optional. I want to present filtered data.

Yes you can create a filter that is associated with that entity and can be later used in the report.

sorry for the confusion, I meant to say you can filter data based on date for example.

That's a little unfortunate. I was hoping to find a way to filter data from entity. Not based on security but say based on date. Is there a way filter data in a model
