I believe that the Enterprise version that comes with the training is the Enterprise Evaluation Edition, the same as can be downloaded here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx familyid=6931FA7F-C094-49A2-A050-2D07993566EC&displaylang=en

The System Requirements on that page lists Windows XP as a valid operating system.

    Hi guys..

Thanks for all your help !! Your posts have saved me from spending abt £60 on buying the developer edition.

Like Gunny, I recently installed the evaluation version that comes with the book on my xp pro system. I had the same concern at first because as Michael pointed out, the regular Enterprise Edition will not work on XP Pro. I had to verify online that the evaluation version of Enterprise works with XP Pro.

What was the error you are getting

Take help of this KBA http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328306 to resolve the issue.

Enterprise Edition won't install on XP. You can install Developer Edition on XP and get the same functionality as the Enterprise Edition. Alternatively, you can create a Virtual Server image that is running the compatible OS version and then install SQL Server Enterprise Edition into that.

    Hi Michael/Uma,

The evaluation version of the Enterprise Edition that comes with the kit will install on Windows XP Pro.  I just installed it on my desktop.

It explicitly says so in the Hardware And Software Requirements section of SQL Server 2005 Books Online.

    Hi,

How do you login in to SQL Server 2005 When I load Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio I get a dialog box with the following entries:

    Server type: Database Engine

    Server name: I enter localhost

    Authentication: Windows Authentication

When I click connect, I consistently get an error message.

Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong

    Thanks much,

    Johnnie
