WDS does not index mht files consistantly

  Darryl,

  I've just been digging about this, and I did this in the search window:

  Clicked 'change preferences'

  Clicked 'With indexing service'

  Clicked 'Change indexing service'

  Selected: Action->Properties in this Indexing Service window

  Checked the tickbox 'Index files with unknown extensions'

  When I went to serach, my mht files were being indexed!

  Please check under advanced options in WDS to see which filter is used to index those files. By default, .mht's filter description should say C:\WINDOWS\system32\mimefilt.dll. If you install a specific software that handles those mht file, that software might take over the default filter for mth files which could break the indexing.

  You must be using an earlier version of WDS because none of these options appear in WDS 3.0. Thanks for posting, though!

  Apologies for the cheap trick trying to get your attention, but I have been unable to get any answers to my question, and it's a real problem for me because I have a ton of info in my mht (html) files and WDS 3.0 does not index mht files contents. It only indexes the titles. Sometimes it finds items that are contained in MHT files but most of the time, it does not. The mht files are stored in My Documents, and the entry for mht files in the WDS options is the default: Index Properties and File Contents.

  The odd thing is that this behavior occurs on two different computers that have similar configurations.

  Thanks for answering my query, David!

  I looked, and indeed, C:\WINDOWS\system32\mimefilt.dll is listed for mht (and for mhtml).
