DO u have any antispyware applications installed.....
CHeck whether that application is locking the internet options from being changed..

Hi, I have the problem described and when I open the settings menu to change the amount of days you suggest is set to 20 and also grayed out. Any clues

Maybe ur history is set to zero days...
There is another button called settings on the right side of "delete", open it and see the no of days under the "history tab"
