Windows Desktop (Searching...) - but no results?

Hi,

I posted a thread re: issues I've been experiencing with 2.6.5 of WDS in the help forum but just upgraded to 3.0 beta 2 and am experiencing similar issues.

I try to input searches in the search box but get a blank pop up stating simply "Windows Desktop (Searching...)" - and no results displayed.

The WDS Search options box displays indexing as complete.

Am using Windows XP with the latest service packs.

Let me know if I need to provide more information.

Thanks,

Jack

    Jack,

Could you please do the following: Go to Start:All Programs: Windows Desktop Search. Next, type a search term in the search box and press Enter. Do you receive search results Also, you should see a location bar in the upper right corner that says "All Locations." Could you please click the down arrow on the bar and tell me what locations are listed

    Thanks,

    Hello Jack,

I've seen this problem several times when people have mis-matches in their Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). When these stacks contain mis-matches WDS is unable to query the index that it creates. Could you please run the Microsoft MDAC checker and let me know what you find out

If you find that there are mis-matches in the MDAC stack there are a few options available to you.

    1. Microsoft has some instructions available on repairing the MDACs.

    2. You can try uninstalling and reinstalling service packs (if your service packs were not packaged with your Windows isntall).

    3. You can reinstall your Operating system.

Unfortunately, if your MDAC stack has mismatches there aren't really any quick or easy solutions.

    Ditto; I deinstalled Office2007B2 and re-installed Office2007. WDS 2.6 with upgrade (

    ) stopped working.

De-installed, re-installed 3.0, indexing completes - for every search "Nothing found in all locations" message is displayed

if you are using the exchange system manager tool, it replaces your mapi dll version with one with a smaller feature set (one that does not support indexing..) check this link to fix.

    Hi Paul,

I did some further investigation on this and found that the Security Updates listed below had updated the files I mentioned in my previous post. I uninstalled the offending Updates, did a reboot cycle, confirmed there were no MDAC mismatches and reindexed WDS - still the same issue.

I then allowed Windows Update to reapply the Security Updates but at this point I get the MDAC mismatches.

I thought I'd give it one more try with a reinstall of WDS so removed it and then the Security Updates, did a reboot cycle and checked there were no MDAC mismatches then did a reinstall of WDS - still the same issue with no results being displayed and just a blank pop up box.

I then proceeded to download the MSN toolbar and am able to see the Desktop search results here so it just seems to be the Deskbar that I'm struggling with.

Can you advise whether I am doing something wrong here or if there is something else I should try

    Regards,

    Jack

    Hi Paul,

    thanks for the prompt response.

I have run the Microsoft MDAC Checker and can report the following results:

    MDAC 2.8 SP1 on Windows XP SP2

    The Mismatch fields are:

    MSADCO.DLL - Expected: version =2.81.1117.0

    msxml.3.dll - Expected: version = 8.50.2162.0

Does this look to be an easily remedied issue

    Regards,

    Jack

I wasted three days or so on this issue and I may have some help for you. When you search inside Outlook and get the famous no results messsage, look in the lower left part of the window. Is there a positive number of results shown If so, click on one of the column headings to resort your nonexistent results, and Voila! Search results, where there were none before.

We experienced this issue in ver. 3.01 of Desktop search.

I haven't heard back on this one in a while so I am going to mark it as answered. Please repost if you are still seeing the problem.

    cheers,

No results for certain file types when searching for contents. Windows broken.. You are not crazy or at least this is not evidence of it.
