Just a quick question does WDS make use of the indexing service in windows xp or is it a separate standalone program independent of this service
I have this turned off at the moment but was wondering if setting it to manual/automatic would improve the performance of WDS.
If WDS doesn't use this service then would it simply slow it down as the two are unrelated and trying to index my hard drive

Indexing Service

Interesting question, as there are registry keys inside the WDS-branch (UsnNotifier) which point to the indexing service catalogs.
MSFTs, a comment would be nice.

The "Indexing Service" is the old legacy content indexer shipped on RTM WindowsXP and Server2003. WDS does not depend on this service and installs it's own service "Windows Search". You can disable this service if you do not have any legacy apps that require this service to be available.
