I've just downloaded Windows Desktop Seach, and it has indexed around 51 000 items. I've checked all my settings several times, and all seems OK according to the Help Menu.
But whenever I type in a Search word, I get a message saying Search Complete - no items found.
At the beginning, I did not ever get a message saying installation of the programme was completed. And I wasn't asked to reboot. Do you think that it may be that the programme was not correctly installed
(Web search works fine - get directed to Google Search, with results listed.)

Windows desktop search - no results

Hi Paul,
Thank you for answer.
I would like to understand, if the problem it is in MDAC, why the WDS 3.0 works very well in another User Profile.
I create a new user, and log on with it. WDS find everything with no problems.
When I back to my user, it does not find anything. Both users are Administrators.
Now, I’m using WDS 2.65,0000,5378 that works very well. (in both users)
Can you clarify
Thanks in Advance,
Eduardo

This generally occurs when you have a corruption in your MDAC stack. You can find instructions for repairing your MDAC stack here (note this solution is not officially supported by Microsoft):
http://www.pqsystems.com/kb/activekb/questions/165/
For some additional information:
MDAC stands for Microsoft data access components. These components allow WDS to query it's index for resutls. When MDAC gets corrupted WDS can not retrieve results from the index resulting in empty query results.

I just have installed MS Office 2007. Outlook search function uses the WDS 3.01 engine to find emails.
When searching for "test" from the OL2007 search window, it works fine.
When search for "test" directly in the WDS 3.01 window, I receive "no results". Only when adding "*" like "*test" in front of the search query, WDS 3.01 will return results.
Is that an error of the front-end of WDS 3.01

No! Not for me...It didn't work here.
Version 2.65 was removed and computer restarted;
Version 3 was installed and computer restarted again;
At this moment, it didn’t work;
MDAC was repaired and computer restarted again;
It still not working;
Logged with another user and it worked!
Back to my user and it didn’t work;
Version 3 was removed, and version 2.65 reinstalled.
It is working again with version 2.65!

I uninstalled this version, deleted the index, installed 3.01. The indexer built the new index but no search results at all.
What is the advantage of 3.01 Shall I be happy with my working 2.6.x or are some significant enhancements in 3.01
Thanks,
J.
I just tried the whole thing again: Installed 3.01, repaired MDAC as mentioned in this thread - no results.
Only when adding "*" in front of each search query it works.
Strange...
Edit:
Just to add the following: I have the same issue like others. WDS is installed on a WinXPSP2 US-English version. However, I use a German keyboard with DE input locales. Sometimes, WDS doesn't provide results unless I switch the input keyboard to EN English.

The thing is that, it is working fine inside Outlook 2007, but only there.
I can't go back to 2.65 because Outlook 2007 ask me for 3.0
But I need to find again! Please!

I have the same problem, but worse. No matter what I search for I get "no items found". I have checked that what I search for actually exists, and I can search through Outlook 2007 and find items in my email. The same items is not found when searching in email through WDS' own search window.
Have you found out anything

This solved the case for me! Thanks!
In my case the problem was system-wide. That is: It didn't help to login with a different user.

It is working with another profile... Very weird! Maybe a problem with SID in profiles, I don’t know. My profile was moved from another computer.

I've previously posted about the strange behavior of WDS (all versions) with German language keyboards in the WDS Developers forum without satisfactory response. The symptom I have seen is that it only produces "no results" with certain searches, but not all. One that reliably produces "no results" with a German keyboard is "ipass". The funny thing is that if you rebuild the index, and search while indexing is still early in the process, WDS returns a very large number of results, most of which do not contain the search term. When the volume of results becomes very high, then you get "no results", which probably just means that the number of results returned is beyond the capacity of WDS to handle it. The problem is not just the German (Germany) keyboard layout, but also the Swiss German keyboard layout.
