WDS 3.0 Beta 2 Crash srchadmin.dll

Hi!

Every time I try to go into the filetypes in the Advanced option dialog WDS crashes on me. I get up a box saying "RUNDLL An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "srchadmin.dll"".
I used to have WDS 2.5 with some extra IFilters but I removed all that before I installed the beta.

Thanks.
Matt

    Matt,

It seems that a few people have run into this problem. I'm going to discuss this with the team to see if we can come up with any solution ideas.

I think I found a possible explanation to this. I tried to install IE7 but it wouldn't let me so I checked the log and it said something about some file extensions it wanted to change but couldn't so I checked my registry and by some unknown reason I had several keys that I couldn't do anything with. The permissions on these had change and I couldn't change anything about them, neither the permission nor anything else. I tried to set myself as owner but that wouldn't work so I reinstalled windows and now WDS3.0 works as it should and I can see the file extensions and it doesn't crash. Why I didn't have permission to these keys I have no idea. I don't know if this is the exact case for everyone but it could perhaps be a hint.

Hm, I think Microsoft could have mentioned this known problem in the surrounding docs like the download page... I have ten-thousands of files indexed and I need to search in those on a daily basis. First, I didn't like that WDS 3.0 deleted all indexes instead of migrating those (this was not mentioned anywhere). But even worse, I cannot rebuild the indexes due to this bug since I'm unable to tell WDS what files to index.

I especially like Microsoft recent user-friendly efforts but this one is not among those any more.

I'm having the same probleme here. Some keys are locked. Any ideas on how to change this without having to reinstall Windows My PC is almost new, I just got it a month ago with OEM WinXP Home installed. Then if I reinstall it would have the same problem. I guess.
    Any ideas anyone

It looks like this happens with the RTW (final) version of WDS 3.0 as well.

It happened on 2 different PCs here at work that had WDS 2.65 installed. On my PC which did not have any version of WDS installed, this was not a problem, although that could be a coincidence.
