Hi,
In WDS 2.6.5 it was possible to scan network drives. In WDS 3.0 Beta 2 this is not possible. When will this feature be returning. As it stands, due to My Documents being redirected and other files being stored on network locations WDS 3.0 isn't much use in a corporate environment. ![]()

WDS 3.0 Beta 2:Scanning network drives

I think I tried that (on my second install during my PC rebuild) and had some problems, but don't remember the details - I'll try again.
Maybe I'll try the whole thing at home where I don't have network storage (but I also don't use Office/Outlook).
Thanks!

Hello NetMage,
As Brandon said, we're currently working on adding the ability to map network drives. In the meantime, you can use WDS 2.6.5 with Office 2007. You will still be able to search for all of your content - you'll just be lacking the nifty "instant search" feature that is embedded in Outlook 2007 w/ WDS 3.0.
If you run Office 2007 with WDS 2.6.5 Outlook will prompt you to enable instant search at every start-up. Do not enable instant search (it will install 3.0). Instead I would suggest you disable the prompt in Outlook by going to Tools:Options:Other. On the advanced tab uncheck the box for "show prompts to install WDS 3.0."

Paul, this is nothing, us beta testers are used to this. If I had to reinstall Windows to get this to work, well, that would be hard. I'll let you know how it works out.

I've reinstalled Office 2007 B2TR and WDS 3.0 Beta 2 and the update and waiting on indexing.
Of course, I already crashed the Windows Taskbar search UI, but that is in another post :)

Paul,
That's great! So is it as easy as uninstalling my WDS 2.6.5, then installing the Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta 2 for Windows XP (KB917013), and then installing Windows Desktop Search: Add-in for UNC/FAT Or do I need to install the original WDS 3.0 beta before I install 917013
Looking forward to it,
Tim

Hi Paul,
Because WDS 3.0 Beta 2 won't index network drivers, I'm back to using WDS 2.6.5 with Outlook 2007 B2TR. However, I often get crashes in Outlook 2007 that I think are attributed to WDS 2.6.5 (crashing in olmapi.dll, which belongs to the Outlook add-in). Any chance we'll see an update in WDS 3.0 that will index network drives
Thanks,
Tim

I thought I would be able to try out Office 2007 again with WDS 3.0 Beta 2 out, but it looks like it won't work for me.
How can you think it is reasonable to remove features and release a Beta
At this rate I won't be able to use Office 2007 after it is released!

Hi Paul,
I was looking forward to this feature since August and tried at out as soon as I found it on the web page.
UNC shares are now properly indexed - however, content stored there fails to be previewed in
the Desktop Search Results - can this be worked around or do I have to wait until the next update
Thanks,
Hannes

We're working to bring that feature back soon.
For the time being we recommend that users who rely on indexing mapped drives (or are in a corporate environment in general) stick with the latest official release, which is WDS 2.6.5.

Yep - uninstall 2.6.5, install 3.0 beta 2, and then install the add-in. It should work for you after that process. I'm flattered that you call it easy (but hey, it is a beta).

Hi Paul,
Will this work for 'Windows Server 2003 64 bit' version I downloaded the add-in and ran it. It seemed to install fine with no errors. I even restarted my machines. However I do not my network drives in Indexed Locations tab.
Thank you for your help.

Wow Tim,
You managed to hit this thread about 2 hours after our add-in to allow WDS 3.0 to index network shares went on the download center (the KB article isn't even up yet) :-) You can find this add-in here:
