When WDS 3.0 RTW tries to index the Outlook Express message store, I am getting the pop-up error:
"Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance. (0x80004005, 183)"
I have plenty of memory and the disk is not full. Does this version index OE Any idea how to resolve this

WDS 3.0 RTW gives error trying to index Outlook Express message store

This is not a known issue and I'm not able to duplicate the problem. I got OE 6 indexed by WDS with no problem. For those of you who still have this problem, please uninstall your WDS and install again from http://support.microsoft.com/ kbid=917013. Make sure you select the right OS as listed and also the language of the OS.
If this does not solve the problem and you had WDS prior to 3.0 installed, the previous version of WDS might not uninstalled correctly. The workaround is to remove any registry entries belonging to desktop search. To do this, make sure you have uninstalled any WDS from Add/Remove program. Also check for "MSN Toolbar" related entries in Add/Remove program as WDS was under MSN before. Remove them if you see MSN Toolbar and it's related entries. Go to your registry editor and remove any entries with "desktop search" values in it. After this has been done, install 3.0 again.
Let me know if this solves your problem.

Toshiba Satellite A105, 1.5 GB RAM, 4 GB min free on C: D: E:, Dual Core, WinXP MCE SP2, All patches.
I get EXACTLY the same message when OE6 is running.
I am so happy that I finally turned up something relevant. How hard is it to remove Desktop Search

I am having the same problem - a symptom I am having which is not posted here is that you cant actually search the indexed content when this error occurs, which makes desktop search pretty much useless.
Is there a resolution posted anywhere

I have done everything you suggested and I still get the same error message :
"Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance. (0X0004005, 183)"
As mentioned above my system is up todate on all Windows XP SP2 and Office fixes. I have 2 GB of memory and over 40 GB of free disk space on the C: drive. I do have a large number of messages is several Local folders (largest currently has 2947 messages).
Outlook Express is 6.00.2900.2180(xpsp_sp2rtm.040803-2158. I also installed the Outlook Express plug in for WDS.
Previously it had indexed the messages in Outlook Express. Now it does not have them indexed after running for over 6 hours.
I had previouly disabled it because of the annoying message popping up all too often. Also, there is something about it that is going crazy with my external drive that I use for backup. This drive is being pounded by continous I/Os. (This occured with the previous install). I use Windows Live One Care and do backup the Outlook Express files (currently backup of Outlook Express files is 295MB).

Joe,
Thanks for your feedback. We're looking into reproducing this problem right now. I hope to report back with more information soon.

Can someone at Microsoft please confirm whether or not this is a known issue and when a fix might be available.

Same problem.
Windows XP HE and OutlookExpress V 6 with latest patches. 2GBs of system memory and over 40 GB free space on the C drive.
I use Outlook Express to access hotmail and store messages I want to keep (and be able to search) in several Outlook Express folders on my system. The largest currently has 2479 messages. Another has over 1000.
