WDS Takes up more than 4 GB of harddisk already and it has only indexed 4022 items and missing 3271 on a 80 GB harddisk. Sounds crazy to me. I saw that 500 Gb of free space was recommended. Google DS did not take up so much space.

WDS Takes too much harddisk space?

Hello Six,
Sorry it has taken so long to get you a reply. The size of the WDS index is difficult to predict. There are a number of factors that come into play with index size. Here is some basic information that may help us determine if this is a bug or expected behavior.
WDS indexes textual content of files. It does not index media (though it does index media metadata). It should also be noted that WDS indexes the first 2MB of the textual content of any file. For sake of reference, 2MB of text is approximately the size of the novel Moby Dick.
With that said, you can see the following:
- If most of your data is made up of media, your index is likely to be small, because WDS will only index the file metadata (name, location, etc.).
- If most of your data is made up of text, your index is likely to be larger, because WDS will index quite a bit of the file. Furthermore, if most of your data is made up of text files 2MB or smaller, WDS will create a rather large index, because it will index the majority of your data.
If much of your data is text content, then a 5GB index may not be out of the question. If you do not have many text files at all, 5GB could represent a problem. It is also worth noting that we index more of a document than Google Desktop Search (significantly more if I remember Google's specs correctly) so the fact that WDS builds a bigger index is not surprising.
Please let me know the approximate make-up of your file content (50% media, 40% text, ...). That will help us determine if there is an issue.

I have indexed my audio drives (about 60 Gb) so far and it only takes up 165 mb of space.
So there was clearly some buggy behavior the first time I used it since it took up more than 5 Gb.

Hardly any of the files on my harddisk are text. I use my computer mainly for making music and so there are a lot of long and short audio files and plugins. So I would say that maybe 5-10% is text and the rest is audio/video/non-text files.

Please; how much harddisk space is the program supposed to use while indexing and afterwards
5 Gb makes no sense at all, so I still think something is wrong.

I'd still like to use the program unless it really does take up more than 5 Gb of harddisk space.
