I recently installed the IE7 release candidate. Over the past couple days, there have been numerous incidents where iexplore.exe process uses 95%+ CPU, and it hangs there for a minute or longer. I haven't found anything specific on this, but is it a known issue that Microsoft is going to fix
Thanks,
Jen

IE 7 CPU Utilization

Yes, I could not agree with you more. The CPU utilization is more than 97% when IE is initially opened without any extensions.

I'm having this issue as well. I'm running IE 7 on Vista Ultimate on a Motion LS800 tablet pc with a gig of ram.
Here is the behavior I'm seeing:
As soon as IE is started the CPU utilization shoots up and stays up with IExpore.exe taking anywhere from 20-80% utilization with the browser open with out me doing anything. My Home page is about:blank so it doesn't even request a page on startup. When I click on new tab and immediately click the cursor into the search box the browser will pretty much freeze for up to 30 seconds. During this time the CPU is 100%. If I minimize IE or bring up another application IE stops hogging the CPU after a few seconds, but as soon as IE becomes the active application again then it begins to take more CPU at the same rate as before. As I'm typing this post IE is taking up 25-48% of my CPU and I only have one tab open. As soon as I close IE it immediate drops off and CPU utlization rests at about 2-4%. It's strange that when I open up the Internet Options dialog the CPU utilization drops to what I would consider normal levels, but as soon as that window is close everything shoots back up.
Here's what I've tried:
1. I've started IE with no extensions loaded (the -extoff switch), but this had no affect.
2. I've disabled all of the extensions and 3 party apps manually, and tried them in different combinations to no affect.
3. I've tried leaving IE run for several minutes as soon as it starts up to see if it might be some sort of start up stuff that was running, but the CPU utilization never went down.
4. I have the phishing filter turned off.
5. I've installed Fiddler and opened it up to see if perhaps the browser was requesting data from something and I didn't see any requests that weren't from me typing in address.
6. I have Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition Version 10 installed to detect viruses and such and haven't seen a hit.
This high CPU utilization doens't help battery life on a mobile machine and more often than not slows my browsing experience down to be almost unusable. Any other ideas on how to figure out what this issue is would be appreciated.

Hi,
Count me in too.
Although, in my experience, ie7 stays very low when i'm browsing, regardless of the amount of open tabs.
When I click in a text box to type something it shoots up to around 50% cpu usage.
Strangely enough, now I am typing and its staying down! Thats a first...Could it be because its a microsoft forum
Are they keeping an eye on what we type in other places
Oh and by the way, the same happens when I use ie7 with no add ons.
Hopefully someone can explain why this happens and how we can prevent it!
Thanks for you time.

Hi Jen,
Do you have any IE extensions installed These are the most frequent cause of performance issues with IE.
This forum is reallty for developer questions. General support can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/default.mspx
Thanks

This is virtually always caused by buggy extensions. Please ensure you have the latest versions. Old versions of Google Desktop and the Java VM in particular are known to be problematic.
You can verify it's an extensions problem by starting in no addons mode. See http://enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp

Hi there
This seems to happen every time I open a second tab in IE and then try to close the browser. It's fine if I just use single tabbed browsing and open many Internet explorers instead of opening many tabs though. The only addons I have enabled are
Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper
Create Mobile Favorite
Create Mobile Favorite...
Google
Google Toolbar Helper
IeCaptureBho Object
Research
Send To Bluetooth
SSVHelper Class
Sun Java Console
Windows Live Sign-in Helper
Windows Messenger
I'm also running Windows Live Messenger on my Windows XP SP2 Laptop, but doubt that's the cause of the problem.

I fixed this problem by disabling two of my " Add on's " in IE7.
From IE7 select Tools / Manage Add-ons / Enable or disable Add-ons
I found that there were two add-ons that the publisher was not verified. Mathies Pop This - Pop up blocker.
Once I selected disable these two items, then select okay and close IE7, then reopen IE7 cpu usage is back to approx 5%
and I can now select new tab okay and close IE7 properly :-)
