Windows Desktop Search 3.01

I'm please to announce the general availability of Windows Desktop Search 3.01

Overview

Windows Desktop Search (WDS) 3.01 is a minor update to Windows Desktop Search 3.0 that adds: support for indexing UNC files, additional support for enterprise deployment, and stability improvements. WDS 3.01 installs on Windows XP and Window Server 2003, but is not needed for Windows Vista since the WDS component is already included in Vista. Windows Desktop Search 3.01 helps you to find, preview, and use your documents, e-mail, music, photos, and other items. The search engine in Windows Desktop Search 3.01 is a Windows service that is also used by applications such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007 to index application content and deliver instant results when searching within that application.

If you choose to install and use Windows Desktop Search, you can search for e-mail, documents and other files located on your computer. No information about the files on your computer will be sent to Microsoft as part of this process. Instead, Windows Desktop Search will index the content of your computer and store the index file on your computer. You can customize Windows Desktop Search to index only specified folders on your computer. Windows Desktop search will not store copies of e-mail or documents after they are deleted.

Note   WDS 3.01 can be installed as a new install or as an upgrade from 02.05.xxxx, 02.06.xxxx or 03.00.0000. On an upgrade from 03.00.0000, you will not need to rebuild your index.

This download package includes the Update.exe, ADM File and Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks.

Note: It may take a few hours for all links to propagate through the Download Center servers.

Thanks again to your dontinued contribution to this thread Eric.

I am unable to locate desktopsearch30.adm after the XP install on my wk'stn or the 2003 install on my svr. Is there an alternate download site where the file might be sourced Alternatively I could receive the file via shawn(at)nwqphc.com.au.

    Thanks

    Shawn

The temp installation file was on a partition ( D: ) on my harddrive. I am now in receipt of the necc. *.adm

    Thanks again Eric

I have installed 3.01 (for XP) and trying to find the ADM. Do you know where it is located after the install (a system search for *.adm did not find it).

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

Run the exe, you should see it display a dialog with a progress bar as it extract the setup files.

At this point you will be at the first dialog of setup. Now at this point, go to the c: drive and and find the new directory that was created (it might be hidden) and the ADM file should be in there. If you exit setup, this directory will be deleted.

Hi I just upgraded to WDS 3.01 from previous version. Unfortunatelly I noticed the same problem as in WDS 3.0 + UNC Add-on. I am using Folder Redirection to redirect My Documents to a Network Share, "My Documents" folder has therefore an UNC path. Indexing and searching work fine, but nothing happens when I right click on the found item and select Open Containing Folder. Has anyone else noticed the same problem THANKS!

    Thanks for the news Eric.

Is there any further info you could supply re:*.msi or GPO downloads

I've managed to add the ADM file to the Group Policy console, but I can't find any of the settings. Where should they be, under Windows Components

  • Horea Soanca

The settings should be under Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Windows Search.

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to configure v3.01 using the registry or GPO templates to only allow the user to index 'My Documents' and Outlook There used to be a GPO setting in v2.6 ,but this is not in v3.01.

    Thanks,
    Stephen.

When you run the .exe, it will extract the package to you hard drive (usually to the c:\ drive and the directory name will be all numbers). In that directory, there is another folder called "update" and in there is a file called desktopsearch30.adm.

Would like to bring a bug to your attention. It was reported on the forums some time ago (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=863356) but never acknowledged. It is still present in 3.01

When indexing an Outlook Express store with a Hotmail account (http mail, not pop), if you leave OE running, after a little while searchprotocolhost.exe will pop up the following error message box:

Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance. (0×80004005, 183)

This can easily be reproduced on a fresh XP sp2 install. When the hotmail http account is removed the error goes away.

This is a known issue with the start search bar. This functionality works correctly in the WDS explorer window.
