Microsoft made using Lookout with Outlook 2007 deliberetaly impossible. WDS is bloatware. I want Lookout, a neat little utility that is a REALLY USEFULL addon to Outlook slow search. It's also configurable (xml). WHY ON EARTH DID MICROSOFT KILL THIS PRODUCT Yes, the index wasn't "realtime", but that's a no issue. Lookout just performed!
Luckely you can still download Lookout: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Lookout_d4808.html
It's just a shame that Microsoft punches it to the ground by hardcoding blocking code into Outlook 2007!
Please bring it back... The community wants it back.
Please uninstall Lookout and start using Windows Desktop Search because Lookout is an old product.
If you want toolbar in Outlook 2003, please install Live Toolbar (http://toolbar.live.com) and make sure that you include Outlook Bar. When installing this Live Toolbar, you have the option also to automatically install WDS.
I too am having this problem. Anyone know a workaround, because I have become very dependant on this. Any help would be appreciated, because desktop search is NOT what I want, email search IS what I want.
If I wanted a desktop product, I would install Google Search, and it is not as good as Lookout either.
Could someone at Microsoft please explain why you disabled a product with a recent update
Indexing public folders is allowed with WDS 3.0 with a few conditions. First, the public folder must be added to your favorites. Second, the public folders must be cached localy. There is a group policy that enforces this restriction and can be disabled to allow direct indexing of the public folders on the exchange server. The upcoming WDS 3.01 release will also ship the .adm file to allow you to change the group policy settings.
Windows Desktop Search is a very poor product. Any program that does not come with an uninstall is poor. I want Lookout back it was fast and easy and didn't trip up my computer.
The problem isn't that WDS can't index, but it's Outlook that's freezing when we try to add the most important public folder. Other, smaller folders do work. The way Lookout indexed the public folders worked much better. Also the centralized index was great.
Reading this message I'm wondering why the ability to index public folders has been dropped, or at least has been changed after Lookout. We have a big public folder store with 5000+ folders and 80000+ messages. We always used Lookout to index these folders and had the index on a server so everyone could access it. This worked pretty good.
I hear everyone yelling that Windows Desktop Search is superior to Lookout. But it isn't on the Outlook bit I think. Creating a cache of a favorite public folder crashes Outlook 2003. So WDS isn't the way to go for us.
Lookout may be an old product but it's far superior to Desktop Search. I have recently 'upgraded' to Office 2007, and I like the new interface now I'm getting used to it. However, Outlook 2007 refused to work with Lookout. Lookout was as near instant as makes no difference, typically giving results in less than 0.2 seconds. Desktop Search takes ages in comparison. I miss Lookout so much I'm considering going back to OL2003, as otherwise it takes too long to find old emails, which I do several times a day.
Lookout has worked perfectly for several years. After a Windows update last week I lost access to Lookout. Now I cannot search an Public Folders or the multiple PST's I have setup. Bring Lookout back NOW....and nobody gets hurt!
I'm so sad that Lookout doesn't work with Office 2007. Wow, it was the best product I have ever used! I work in a place (just like I'm sure everyone else does) that people save 100's of megs on their pst files. Wow, Lookout will find anything! Even any document you have on a share somewhere. I have poeple all the time coming to me asking me to install Lookout on there machine because they saw someone else with it and they want it too!!

Seriously, bring back Lookout.
Lookout > WDS.
Listen to the feedback Microsoft. WDS is not even close to what Lookout was.
