WDS 3.0 Final: Exception occured while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "srchadmin.dll""

Hi again,

I got this, too!

I've seen a few threads here relating to this issue, although the thread starters often used the Beta versions.

I get this problem when I click on the File Types tab in the "Advanced Options"

I tried:

REGSVR32 SHELL32.DLL

and

sfc /scannow

No dice.

I uninstalled the program, and reinstalled it. Same problem.

And even worse, all my SIX taskbars disappeared! Argh, I have four rows of icons on my taskbar, and now I have to set up everything again. This will set me back an hour. (yeah, I know it's a big taskbar... But I am running four monitors, the main one at 2048x1536!)

Any news will be welcome!

Thanks!

WDS 3.0 Final: Exception occured while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "srchadmin.dll""

    Alcohol.exe = 1.4.2 build 308. ( Pretty old, right but useful )

On WDS 3.0 and 3.0.1 had the same problem.

    Good luck Ilia.

I've installed Alcohol 120 v1.9.6 build 4719, opted in on everything except its toolbar, in View->options->virtual drive->shell extension I clicked "select all". I installed WDS 3.01, opened Control Panel->Indexing Options->Advanced->File Types, and the problem didn't reproduce. Which version of Alcohol were you using Could you try reproducing the problem with 3.01

    Thanks,

    Ilia

    Hello G_Unit,

Sorry you've been waiting for so long. Looking at collected Dr. Watson crash dumps involving Indexing Options control panel applet (CPL), I can't find anything that seem to correspond to the problem you've encountered. Do you have error reporting enabled To verify, please open the System CPL, go to Advanced, Error Reporting, make sure "Enable error reporting" is selected and both checkboxes below are checked. Please reproduce the crash and send us the error report. Then, open the the "Application" log in the Event viewer (start\run\"eventvwr"). Look for a pair of events, an Error (red circle) followed by an informational message (white balloon, Source "Windows Error Reporting", event ID 1001). The informational message contains the "bucket ID" number in the Description text. Please reply with this number, and I'll try to figure out what's wrong with it.

    Thanks,

    Ilia

This is a benign error. This error is usually posted if you shut down the service while we are crawling a store. We are removing these non-user actionable events from the event log in the next version of WDS.

I've installed Alcohol120_trial_1_4_2_308.exe and Indexing Options CPL crashed when trying to get .iso file icon. The crash is an access violation in AXShlEx.dll. This is Alcohol's library, and the problem seems to have been fixed in the latest version, so upgrading should do it for you.

If anyone run into this issue without having Alcohol 120% installed, please let us know.

    Thanks,

    Ilia Sacson

Thank you very much for your suggestion !!

I removed files association from my Alchohol 1.9.5 (Build 2722) and now everything is working.

Still no luck, and it's been about a month...!

Yep, I uninstalled Alcohol and it's working now. I wasn't really using it anyway.

I've been having this exact same problem. After reading this thread I tried something that worked. But I don't know if I can help anyone else out or not.

I'm running Alcohol 120 v1.9.5 build 3105 at work. I'm using the latest version at home. I copied the AXShlEx.dll from home and pasted it into my Alcohol directory here at work. My problem with Desktop Search and srchadmin.dll went away.

However I am getting the following message in my Application Event Log. Is this related to this problem

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: Windows Search Service
    Event Category: Gatherer
    Event ID: 3036
    Date: 3/14/2007

    Hi all,

I just wanted to confirm that I removed Alcohol 120% and WDS 3.01 stopped crashing.

My version of Alcohol 120% was 1.9.5. (Build 2802)

    I hope this info helps.

    Thanks!

The problem is not the WDS 3.0.

I had the same problem and I resolved SoMeHoW.

It occurs when the srchadmin.dll tries to enumerate all the registered file types on the computer ( in order to find it's description ).

Try SoMeHoW to see which are the dlls that are loaded while enumerating; the last loaded dll ( when the MsgBox shows the error ) is the incompatible one.

Command line to run ( in the SoMeHoW program ) is like :

    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe" shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "srchadmin.dll".

My problem was "alcoholx.dll" ( Alcohol 120° ) for the "*.iso" file type which explodes the srchadmin.dll.
