Hi Everybody,
It's getting very frustrating that WDS Beta 2 is still not working for me. It only works from within Outlook 2007 beta 2 technical refresh 2, but i always get "NOTHING FOUND" from the normal Search Deskbar. This while i basically went through all possible settings 100 times and installed, deinstalled and reinstalled the product multiple times, the last two weeks. Also if i install another search engine, like your friend Google or Copernic, it works instantly.
Something must be broken somewhere, but everything else on my computer is working fine and actually it's quite a fresh install. Can somebody please make a point about this and help me out Am i the only one with this problem, i can't imagine.
Sure, i like to beta test and help make this a better product if i can, BUT I CAN'T GET IT TO WORK in the first place.
Very annoying, please help.
Thanks.

CAN SOMEONE HELP PLEASE? WDS STILL NOT WORKING

Haha, in fact i do love it a lot!
Reinstalled the whole lot last nite, incl. Windows XP itself, and now all is set and working like a charm.
I'll keep away from the PDF filter until you guys post an update or new release.
Also, some companies have a lot of "intranet sites", like many sharepoint teamsites. How do you prevent thousands of clients from indexing those over the network, while still providing the rich search power this tool offers us We now have server and client based indexing, but is it not possible for both sides to come together in a single client somehow
Cheers,
Nikolai

Sleutelaar,
It sounds like the installation of WDS did not work as expected. Could you please do the following to help me diagnose the problem.
First make sure you are an administrator on your machine
Then, go to start:run
Type "cmd" (no quotes) and then press Enter
In the comand prompt please type the following (including quotes): reg export "HKLM\software\microsoft\windows search" wsearch_registry.txt
This will create a log file in the following location: C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%
Please go to this location and find wsearch_registry.txt. Once you have found this file please email it to a-paulny@microsoft.com

We found this problem did not occur if we un-installed adobe ifilter 6 and installed adobe ifilter5.

Hello Sleutelaar,
Thank you for sending me your information. Looking at your registry settings, it appears that you have installed the .pdf IFilter and removed the .pdf extension exclustion from teh Search excluded extensions list. There is currently a bug in the Adobe .pdf IFilter that causes indexing to stale. We are currently working with Adobe to fix this issue. In the mean time, you can fix this issue by disabling all file extensions associated with the Adobe IFilter.
Here are the steps you can follow:
1. Open your Control Panel and then Open Indexing Options.
2. Click the Advanced Button.
3. Inside the Advanced Options window select the File Type tab.
4. Look for the .pdf extension and notice the Filter description.
5. Uncheck the .pdf extension and then look for any other extensions that have the same filter. Uncheck those extensions as well.
6. Restart your pc.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the tips, i unchecked everything which was using the PDF Filter, rebooted the PC and waited for a day to have the index rebuild. Nothing improved, still can't search.
But... i think it's related to my current installation of Windows XP SP2 + Office Beta 2 TR + IE 7.0 RC1. At one point i had a combination of Office 2003 and 2007 installed, so i could both test and make sure my 2003 .PPT wouldn't get messed up by 2007.
However, i do not recommend anybody to do that, because Sharepoint Edit in DataGrid functionality will break and there is no way to repair it without reinstalling Windows XP. I still have this problem on my PC and i wouldn't be suprised if there is more damaged software on it by having the combination of Office products installed.
Other than this i am pretty sure that it's not because of something else, but it must have to do with the above somehow.
You can stop investigating if you like, i;ll just completely reinstall everything again one of these days.
Best regards,
Nikolai
