I am trying to search a folder containing a C# project for files containing the string ".bmp".
Please note very well that I am NOT looking for bitmap files, I am looking for text files that contain the string ".bmp"
I put .bmp into the box for "A word or phrase in the file" and click search. The stupid thing returns only bitmap files. See the link below for a screenshot.
This is on Windows Server 2003 Standard SP1.
Please advise both:
a) how to find files properly
b) when you are going to fix this issue. The search feature has sucked since at least XP.
Thanks

Search gets confused and returns utter rubbish

Daniel,
It sounds like you are using Search Companion - the standard search feature that comes with XP. This forum is specifically for Windows Desktop Search - a free add-in that allows instant search of your desktop. The good news is that Windows Desktop Search (WDS) should solve your problem. If you download it and type ".bmp" it will find all files with .bmp in them (this will, include bitmap files as well).
You can download WDS here:

Hi Paul
Thanks for the reply.
It's great that WDS will actually work and do what it's supposed to (unlike the regular search engine).
It's a shame that the built-in engine no longer works as well as it used to in Win2000 and previous.
Can you tell me, does the WDS churn away indexing in the background, or does it search ad-hoc on demand I tried google desktp but was unhappy because a) it thrashed my hard drive while indexing while I was trying to work, and b) it seemed fine for searching emails but not regular files on the drive.
Thanks and regards
Daniel
