Is it just me or does WDS 3 just seem broken I am trying to understand why I should install WDS 3 when it seems that many features I use each day have been removed.
Examples include requiring an add-in to search UNCs, no Group Policy support, no PDF iFilter. Another problem is many of the iFilters I currently use don't work with WDS 3 like the old PDF iFilter.
Does this mean that Search in Vista is just as broken Someone indicated that there was a whitepaper or document explaining how to chose the version to install. Does this document really exist

Why would anyone want to install WDS 3 instead of 2.6.x?

David,
Will we be able to exclude folders again THIS IS COMPULSORY!
When you have 8 years of email and are registered to 30+ listserves, you do NOT want outlook automatically cataloging all your mail.
Please say we get this control back.

Hi Greg,
Your concerns have been addressed in the next release of WDS which should be available by the end of the month.
As for the Outlook's junk folders, WDS by default is not indexing the junk folders.
Vista would get it's fixes with the service pack 1.

David,
Thanks for the reply.
My two main concerns are the ability to index a UNC without an add-in and inability to select/unselect specific Outlook folders.
The current UNC add-in basically sucks. :-( It's a bad hack on top of the WDS3 configuration UI -- very unpolished. Also, previews are disabled when selecting an item on a network drive -- why Finally, if I use the "word wheel" short pick list and click on a hit that resides on the network WDS ignores my selection. If I use the full search interface everything works okay except I don't get my previews.
WRT Outlook, maybe I'm missing something but I frequently have multiple PSTs opened and I don't want all folders in each PST indexed. The biggest issue for me is I don't want WDS trying to index my spam folder(s). I have no idea if WDS ignores Outlook's builtin spam folder because I don't use it -- I use SpamBayes which is way more effective than Outlook's junk mail filter. Why the Office team didn't implement a Bayesian filter is beyond me but that's another gripe...
Can you address these questions and finally will these updates be made available to Vista The number one reason I refuse to endorse Vista is the crappy functionality of WDS3.
I apologize if that sounds harsh but it's my reality. I've become really dependent on WDS2.6 and its integration into the Windows shell. It has literally changed the way I work.

Most of these issues have been addressed in the next release including GP support. As for PDF iFilter, you need to download the latest Reader v.8 from Adobe's website that is compatible with 3.x.
WDS 2.6 is still the recommended software to install until the next release of WDS 3.x which will bring most its functionality from 2.x back. Thus explain why the main Desktop Search page is still referring to 2.x.
One of the advantages of using WDS 3.x is it's central index location compared to multiple indexs for 2.x (one for each user on a machine). Another is running it as a service instead of an application which will boost performance. 3.x also indexes more properties than 2.x.

Yeah I have finally decided to uninstall WDS as it was crushing my workstation and outlook.
I really feel they rushed this out the door. Not being able to exclude folders in outlook is absolutely rediculous. I am going to try Google Desktop...

David,
The updated UNC functionality sounds superb. Do you know if it will address the problem people were experiencing with file locking on shared drives with v2.6 (re. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/927018/en-us.) We'd like to deploy WDS 3 for our XP users, but until the file locking issue has been addressed our IT staff refuse to allow any indexing of shared network drives.
