Certification?

Hi group,

Just discovered this forum.... Been programming MS for only 5 years so I couldn't have known this

I'm planning a new personal certification track. Since I want to move to the functional part in due time I'm thinking of the following:
MCAD.Net + MSF

I want to take the MSF exam instead of ITIL and/or ASL.

Is this a good idea or should I also certify for ASL and ITIL

TIA

Certification?

Having done certification and training MSF, ITIL (and MOF which is adaptation of ITIL), it really depends on what you want and what world you live. MSF is a great methodology for creating applications. All the more so since it's baked into VSTS. ITIL, on the other hand, is all about how you mange and deliver the overall solution once the application has been developed. I would regard both as valuable in their own right but more so in combination.

As a developer, understanding how the service management and delivery folks are going to take your app and live with it can provide great insight to you as you design, develop, test then release your code. The developer who understands and speaks the language of operations is more valuable on a team than the ones who don't. IMHO, of course.

With respect to the situation today. As a CPLS, my firm offers training in all three. In the nearly 4 years I've been here, we've never had any interest at all in MOF and I've run one MSF course. We've run some TTT events, but even these were poorly attended and were not supported by the local office. On the other hand, we run ITIL training pretty much every week or two to relatively full classes. At least here in the UK, ITIL is a cert in demand - MOF and MSF certs are not. Of course, since ITIL came from the UK, this may be a somewhat biased situation - things may vary in your region.

As a CPLS, we have not been informed of the certification going forward for MSF 4. And looking for it, I can't find much on MOF and MSF certificaction in general. Now that VSTS has RTMed, I hope we start to see some more details of the new certs. As well as some updates on MOF.

    Hi TIA

Depends on what you want. MSF is more about project management, ITIL is more obout operations (like Microsoft Operations Framework).

If you are in infrastructure or providing services such as infrastructure, helpdesk etc. ITIL is the way to go.

If you are momre focussed on project delivery, go with MSF. BUT, the while ITIL prepares you for operations specifically, MSF contains general principles that are very valuable. I'd say everyone should do MSF, then specialise further if needed.

I attained my MSF certification a few months ago.  The MSF content is good to know.  It provides good information about roles and responsibilities as well as structured risk management.

I also attained RUP certification a few months ago.  The RUP certication focuses more on iterative and incremental development.  I think that the RUP certification is also valuable and the use of RUP is widespread.

I think that every methodology has its own strengths and that justifies its existence as a unique methodology.  Therefore, the more methodologies one is certified in the better, IMO.

    Hello,

While I'm not new to MS solutions and development, I am new to MSF 4 and VSTS and am having a terrible time trying to figure out how to get where I want.

To start, regarding the MSF certification, could someone provide a link to the latest MSF certification info I was only able to find info for MSF 3. Is there even a current certification program for MSF 4

    Regards,
    Lincoln

Welcome to the forum! Certification often depends on the needs of your environment. Certainly, ITIL certification is always an option. We recommend that you become certified in MSF but then we might be slightly biased. Getting an MSF certification is always a good idea.
