I've set up vss over http however, the only way our developers have access is if they are added to the Administrators group and this is an obvious security problem. I've given our dev group full control over the vss database as well as the shared directory and still no luck.
I get the following error when they try to connect: The Visual SourceSafe Web Service returned the following error: VSS Web Service could not open the database.
Thanks in advance for any help, this is driving me nuts.

Did anyone ever find a solution this problem, I am in exactly the same situation and it's driving me crazy...
We have a Windows Server 2003 (64bit) accessed over the web using Sourcesafe Internet plug-in from Visual Studio 2005. It works perfectly if I add a user to the Administrators group but if I don't do this I get the following error:
"VSS Web Service could not open the database."
I have tried giving the user account full control of the vss web service folder and the shared folder where the vss database resides but nothing I do makes any difference.

I am having the same problem.
Local LAN connection works fine.
If I try to open project via HTTP, sometimes I get the error.
Sometimes I can browse the DB to the .sln I want to open, and then when I open it, I get the error.
Sometimes, I can open the .sln and it works.
Server is Windows 2000-sp4 running IIS with VSS2005 installed (is windows 2000 too old )
Client is XP-sp2 with VSS2005 and VS2005

I'm having same exact problem. When I open the database remotely using Visual Studio and browse to the database sometimes I can browse the database and get an error before I can even download the project.
Any solution to this
