Problems loading August MSDN Library

During the install of the August MSDN Library, my syste blue screened and rebooted. After coming back up I've attempted to restart the install, repair and remove the library and I always get the same error message:

The wizard was interrupted before MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005 could be completely installed.

Your cmputer has not been modified. To complete installation, run setup again.

Click Finish to exit the wizard and run setup again.

How do I get past this so that I can complete the install

    This issue was resolved on Karl's machine. Since his machine got into locked state, we uninstalled all MSHelp-related applications (MSDN for VS 2005, Microsoft Document Explorer 2005, etc), made sure that a folders "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft Help" and "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\help" no longer present on his machine, and reinstalled Microsoft Document Explorer 2005 and August library back on the machine

    My machine doesn't have the rgstrn.lck file, I also tried what you suggested in your previous posting and emailed the result to you offline.

    I've also got the same problem with the MSDN Aug 2006 installation. rgstrn.lck is not on my machine. I have a lot of third party components that integrate into VS help and have also had the blue screen recently. Attached is my log.

    Please try renaming folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help (not "Help 8"!) and run Repair for Microsoft Document Explorer 2005

    If this does not help, please MSDN setup using command "setup.exe /l*v C:\msdn.log" and send me resulting msdn.log file

    G'day,

    This worked for me.

    Solution Steps

    1. Run Disk cleanup on Developer (non admin user) and Administrator user profiles.
    2. Reviewed
      C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\ folder for *.msi files
    3. Reviewed
      C:\Documents and Settings\*Developer*\Local Settings\Temp folder for *.msi files.
    4. Re-attempting the MSDN Aug 2006 installation and failed.
    5. Repaired the Visual Studio 2005 MSDN installation. I suspected there was a corruption in that software due to some strange behaviour I ignored following the blue screen crash.
    6. Retried installing the MSDN Aug 2006 installation from the Administrator user profile.
    7. Installation now running correctly.

    Lessons Learnt

    • Other corrupted *.msi packages had to be repaired for the Developer/Admin profiles, but didn't seem to effect the MSDN installation.
    • Repairing the VS2005 MSDN installation was painfully slow and crashed a few times when I put the wrong disk in (hurrying).
    • Running Disk Cleanup cleans up the users profile only, even if you run it with administrators privilages.
    • 4 hours is a long time to upgrade help documents.

    Yes several times, in fact I get the same message if I just go into Add/Remove programs and I attempt to Repair, Update or Remove the Library.

    Our research shows that the CustomAction that tries to launch CreateSession API (of MSHelp) fails. We cannot find the good workaround yet. We think that some MSHelp transaction was not completed correctly, but we are waiting for additional information from other team on how to resolve it.

    For now, please try to run from the command line: msiexec /x {126F52E7-B956-424A-A843-C16085A9BBB8}
    This should uninstall the product.

    If this does not help, I have additional workaround for you that should work, but I would prefer to communicate that via e-mail first, and then, if it helps, post to this forum. So please send e-mail to mariash@microsoft.com and I will reply.

    One more suggestion: please go to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft Help\ and see if you have a file named rgstrn.lck. If it exists, try to delete it and rerun MSDN installation
