have you considered looking at the product documentation for your version of 3DSMax Presumably the manual and/or support forums for the software will tell you what you can do with it (and how).

I can't personally afford 3DSMax so I don't use it, but I have heard that later versions do (or will) integrate with D3D's Effects framework via DXSAS.
