As an addendum to the above, once you have GSE installed you should be able to just add references to the XNA DLLs in a VS project and go. You lose the content pipeline, templates, etc. but it should work.
Its been said that it only works with express, XNA Game Studio was aimed specifically at express users, I have heard it can work, however the content pipeline does not.
The game Studio Express is only targeted to the Visual Studio C# Express Edition, and will not work and is unsupported on all other versions. In the future there will be a version released that will intergrate into the pro and above versions but this will come at a cost. More information on this can be found on the XNA FAQ Site. Remember that Visual Studio Express C# and GSE are free and targeted to hobby developers and small Development Houses.
