360 Controller Image in a help context

Anyone know the legal issues around using an image of the 360 controller in the context of a help screen. IE: What buttons on the controller perform what actions in the game.

This is a Windows game so I'm wondering if MS allows for that.

I think the thread you posted to might be for MVPs only - the Connect site is letting me view threads and shows I'm signed in, but not the thread you linked to. The page isn't a 404: Not Found; the error is "the page doesn't exist or you don't have permissions to view it." Sounds like that second one.

I'm sure it'd be perfectly fine as XNA and Xbox 360 are both developed by Microsoft. You'd have to check with someone else if this is going commercial at some point, though, because when money gets into things you're going to want to check everything over for license issues and things like that.

I like the idea, and have posted a feeback item on the Connect site. For those who also like the idea or to add to it you should post comments and vote on the connect site.

Here is the post I made

"With the release of the framework, can we get a set of standard images that can be used in Applications and Documentation. By this I mean a standard of Approved images/artwork. Doing this will allow the user base to use images that have been approved for publication and will stop users from making there own, as well as allowing the applications and Documentation to use a standard system.

This could be done along the same lines of the icons and such that get released with the Visual Studio system. These images could include pictures of the controllers and there buttons and all the way to say a Created with XNA icon or the like, simular to the Built with asp.net icons that you can get.

This question has been asked in the forums and I thought that it would be good to record here and get the votes of the userbase. (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=776702&SiteID=1)"

Did anything ever come of this

I need to show an image of the controller on the game setup screen (where users assign controllers to the teams). I also need to show the controller button layout with call outs to indicate what buttons do what.

One caveat I need to throw out there is that this is not an XNA based game. It's just 'Plain Jane' DirectX. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't seem to have any other areas where a question like this can be asked.

I have not seen an official response to this yet. (and yes, I clicked the link to see if there was one). I'd like an official word from Microsoft, as well as a link to psd's, png's, or any other image format files that are authorized.

As an aside, if anyone has any link as to the Games For Windows certification kit and how to use it, I'd appreciate it. (I'm assuming the GFW certification process mirrors that of the WHQL process for hardware and I assume there is a certification kit required)

    Thanks

    David

    Andy,

Connect works a bit funny. You can be logged into passport, but for some reason that does not count as a connect login. Click the link, get the page not found error, click the Sign In button on that page then click the Link again and you'll be where you need to be.

It's definitely an issue that should be fixed, but that's the workaround for now.

Nothing has happened yet, I will drop a line to some people to see what we can do.

    Glenn,

When I click on your link, it takes me to a Microsoft Connect 'Page not found' page. I see this a lot when trying to vote and I am currently logged into Passport.

I think this problem may have been raised a number of times but I thought I would bring it to your attention.

    Thanks

    Andy
