  • Visual Studio 2008 (Pre-release) DLinq thread safety

I am working on an application using both WCF and DLinq. As we all know, DLinq is not thread safe. Since DLinq supports lazy-loading, it is more difficult to control when the DLinq will get involved. There always will be more than one threads in WCF application. What is the best way to safely use DLinq I just wonder why DLinq itself is not thread safe. That is will be a lot easier for programmers. I second that - DataContexts should be fast to new up. Please make sure that model meta data is cached internally so that we don't pay the penalty each time a tier is asking for data. Aside from that, it's all looking great. It's easy to get your hands burned by a CTP but then again, wouldn't miss it :-) ...Show All

  • Visual Basic VB Screen Sharing

I'd like to write a program that allows me to work on my PC from other PCs in our LAN, or over the internet. (a kind of screen sharing app). I think it would be fairly easy by sending compressed images over TCP to the guest, then having the guest sending input back to my PC. So how do I: Take a screenshot Compress it to a small JPG Send it over a TcpClient connection Thanks in advance. ReneeC, I will implement using Deltas in the final version. For now I just wanted to see how to send an image over a TCP connection in the first place. ...Show All

  • SQL Server Using OPENROWSET for csv files

I have 2 instances of SQL2005 running on the same server. I'm trying to use openRowset to get data from a csv file. This is the query. SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET ( 'MSDASQL' , 'Driver={Microsoft Text Driver (*.txt; *.csv)}' , 'SELECT * FROM \\share\file.csv' ) The query works fine on one instance, but not the other. On the other instance I get this error. OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Text Driver] System resource exceeded.". Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)". Any help would be greatly appreciated. ...Show All

  • .NET Development CAS declarative security

How come it is not possible for an otherwise fully trusted assembly to refuse some permissions (declaratively) without loosing it's full trust status Thanks for your reply ;) I guess I cannot use CAS to reduce the attack surface of assemblies or for defense-in-depth measures, then Seems a bit odd that CAS blocks what seems like a reasonably security-aware strategy for assembly development - assemblies explicitly refusing privileges can hardly be considered less trustworthy than assemblies that do not. From an administrators point of view it would seem less risky to place full trust in assemblies that only require read-access to a specified directory than assemblies that require full trust. / Mikkel ...Show All

  • Visual Studio Visual Studio Combined Help Collection is Borked

How do I repair a damaged help collection In an effort to reduce the insane duplication of help collections I've managed to completely bork my Visual Studio 2006 Combined Help Collection. I've been trying different collections of help files by using the Help Collection Manager form and have finally broken everything. When I launch Combined Help I now get a blank home page with no TOC in the Contents sidebar and no topics in the Index sidebar. However, both sidebars have long lists of items in their "Filtered by:" dropdowns. I am able to access the Help Collection Manager form by manually typing in the url. I can even manipulate the selected collections and verify that the changes are persisted. What I cannot do is get Combined He ...Show All

  • Visual Studio Problem inserting code Snippets

Hi, I am having difficulty inserting code snippets. When I right mouse click and say Insert snippet I'm told that there are "No snippets available". The same thing happens if I go Edit -> Intellisense -> Insert Snippet. I've checked in the Code Snippets Manager and all the locations and paths are correct and I can view all of the snippet files in explorer. This used to work fine for me. I installed SP1 about 2 weeks ago - but I'm not sure if this is when the problem arose. Can anyone shed any light on what might be wrong Thanks very much, dlarkin77 I have a bit of a problem with the CodeSnippetManager too. Mine is just plain empty. Nothing listed under the Languages and I can not seem ...Show All

  • Visual Studio Sandcastle, August CTP Questions

Just installed Sandcastle today and I already have a question or two about it. First off, let me apologize for the blacked out ports of the image as this is for a product that has not been publicly announced yet. The first question: How do I get a title for the CHM file   If I pull up ADO210.chm, it has a title of "Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects 2.5 (ADO)" rather than "Help". Second question: What does that little warning gif in the document frame window mean   How do I replace it with real content, like the first page of the only namespace in the CHM file Update: Apparently the forum doesn't like rendering out <img> tags.  Okay, here's a link to the image then. Thanks! Rory Thanks! This prod ...Show All
