Visual Studio 2008 (Pre-release) Why LINQ will succeed
1. LINQ syntax beats SQL syntax. SQL is flawed in that queries become exponentially difficult to write as their complexity grows. LINQ scales much better in this regard. Once you get used to it, it's hard to go back. 2. Database queries are easily composable. You can conditionally add an ORDER BY or WHERE predicate without discovering at run-time that a certain string combination generates a syntax error. 3. More bugs are picked up at compile-time. 4. Parameterization is automatic and type-safe. 5. LINQ queries can directly populate an object hierarchy. 6. LINQ to SQL provides a model for provider independence that might really work. 7. LINQ significantly cuts plumbing code and clutter. Without sweeping stuff under the carpet, like Workflo ...Show All
Software Development for Windows Vista link problem in MonitorInfo9 example
Hi, all, When I try to compile and run this example, the following link problem appears. monitorinfo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "unsigned int (__stdcall* ATL::g_pfnGetThreadACP)(void)" ( g_pfnGetThreadACP@ATL@@3P6GIXZA) I fond g_pfnGetThreadACP is defined in USES_CONVERSION which is used in W2T and so on. I tried some answers for this problem provided in internet. But they do not work. thanks in advance for your time and consideration. Best, Damon It might be in atlsd.lib. Incidentally, USES_CONVERSION was removed from the samples for the Vista SDK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Wasson, DirectShow SDK Documentation This posting is provided " ...Show All
SQL Server one package running with different connection strings?
I have a SSIS package which needs to connect to 5 different servers to import data. I want to schedule one task to run this one .dtsx but run once for each server connection( 5 different servers). Is it possible how can i accomplish it Is Package configuration possible How to go about it if so thanks, kushpaw Just a thought. I have not tried this but it should work in theory. You can store your connection strings in a DB, query the table and do a for each container to loop through them in the control flow. Before going to your Data Flow, use the script task to assign the value to your connection variable. In the properties of your data source you can set an expression to assign the variabl ...Show All

Windows Forms Updating project without changing DB
Please excuse me if this is a silly question but this is my first project with VB (VS 2005 Express Edition). The application uses SQL Server 2005 Express. Soon, I will be in a position to take a large amount of data from the end user of the project and put it into the database then deploy the application to his machine. This will be a long process as there is some data in spreadsheets and lots of data on the backs of envelopes etc! At this point he will begin to use the application and add/modify data on a regular basis. However, after a few weeks, he will return to me and say "Can you change this part There's a bug in that part etc." How can I then update the application and re-install it on his machine and mai ...Show All
SQL Server Generate custom primary key fields
Hi all, I've recently dabbled into the world of Stored procedures and Triggers but am having some issues trying to implement some functionality. What I want to accomplish is to either create a SP or Trigger (I'm still trying to figure out the prime differece between them) that takes values in, concatenates them, adds an increment and then saves it into the assigned column. Say for example I have a company name, and a region Name: 'Traders Inc" Region: KEN (Kenya). What I want my sp to do is take the first four letters of the name, add a dash, concat the region and add an increment starting from 001 thereby giving me TRAD-KEN-001 . Incase I put in another entry, it should do the same and start it at 001 as well. Only when the ...Show All

Visual Studio MSBuild vs NAnt
Please share your thoughts about comparison between those two There are a lot people complaining about problems when targeting Solution files in MSBuild. I think the only way to solve the problem permanently is for MS to completely ditch the Solution file format . I fully agree on you with this. We stopped using Solution files for production builds, just use them for convenience of local development. ...Show All
Visual Studio Team System Extending Work Items - Bug Tracking
One issue with the Team system bug tracking is that I cannot seem to see how testers, using Team Explorer, can simply paste screen shots into an issue. Instead they have to save the file manually and then add an attachment. Am I maybe missing something here Has anyone got a suggestion as to how I can get around this issue Thanks, There's nothing built into v1 that does this. James Manning has posted an add-in that does this. See http://blogs.msdn.com/jmanning/archive/2006/07/04/655757.aspx . Buck ...Show All

.NET Development StDev returns NaN
Hi Everyone: When using the code to calculate the StDev of a data column, it returns NaN. But all other aggregate functions, like Sum, Count, Min or Max return a number on the same data column. It seems this function has a limit on the maximum number of rows it can hundle. The number of rows in the column is 46712; if I reduce the row number to 46064, it works. DataTable.Compute("StDev(DataColumnName)", "") Does anyone has this problem before Does anyone know under what condition, this function returns a NaN Thanks. With the following code, I got the problem you reported: DataTable dt = new DataTable(); dt.Columns.Add("col", typeof(double)); ...Show All

.NET Development Problem looping over rows created within the same loop
I'm re-writing an application that was originally coded in Paradox. It was set up to add "events" to a table when other rows in the table contained a certain number of "points" or a certain amount of time had passed: i.e.: ID: 1 Event: Start Date TotalPoints: 0 PointReductionDate: null ID: 2 Event: Point Violation TotalPoints: 2 PointReductionDate: 9/15/2006 ID: 3 Event: Point Reduction TotalPoints: 1 PointReductionDate: 10/15/2006 ID: 4 Event: Point Reduction TotalPoints: 0 PointReductionDate: 11/15/2006 The setup is a lot more complicated than this (multiple reset types, multiple event types and exceptions, user can add events at any position), but this is the general idea. ID 3 and ID 4 need to be automatically generated whe ...Show All
